Charles & Ray Eames

Mid-Century Modern Architects, Designers

Charles and Ray Eames were a husband-and-wife design duo responsible for creating iconic furniture designs that helped shape the future of home furnishings, such as the Eames Lounge Chair and DSR Chair. The pair experimented with using plywood in innovative ways, creating strong, flexible furniture that could take on nearly infinite shapes and forms. In addition to furniture, the duo designed a number of houses, perhaps most notably their design for the Case Study Houses program, which was uniquely comprised of industrial materials, like commercial doors and factory sash windows. Both their furniture and home designs were known for being equal parts playful, functional, simple, and modern, resulting in highly unique creations that solidified the Eames’ prominent place in the history of American architecture and design.
